Letter #13

The First One

Some sarees become special because of how they are woven.
Some because of where they come from.
And some simply because of the memories they carry.

This one is my first saree and my first Kanchivaram, bought for me by my dad more than 25 years ago.

A simple half-white Kanchivaram with checks — nothing elaborate, but probably one of the most special sarees in my wardrobe.

Over the years, many more Kanchivarams have found their way into my collection, but there is something about the first one that can never really be replaced.

I try to bring her out at least once every year, and somehow, more often than not, it happens around Onam. Maybe it is the half-white, maybe it is just a little tradition I have created for myself over the years.

Sometimes, the memory attached to a saree is reason enough to wear it again. ❤️

Until next Letter,

Love,

Vidhya Raghunathan
